Abstract
This research attempts to explain the influence of depression on the life satisfaction of the elderly people living alone. Also, we are focusing whether there is a mediating effect of problem drinking between depression and the life satisfaction of the elderly people living alone. The samples, 312 persons who live alone over 60 years of age were selected from the data of 2¡¯st wave Korea Welfare Panel Study, administered by Korea Institute for health and Social Affairs(KIHASA) and Seoul National University(SNU) in 2007. Life satisfaction was measured by 6 items: health status, residential environment, job, social relationship, leisure status and the quality of life. Depression measured by CES-D10. The mediating variable is the problem drinking measured by CAGE. Frequency analyses and multiple regressions were used to explain relationships among variables, using SPSS 17.0. The result of the study shows that depression have a negative influence on the life satisfaction and a positive influence on problem drinking. It was also verified that problem drinking variable has a partial mediating effect between depression and the life satisfaction. These results present the importance of developing adequate intervention programs for the elderly people living alone to prevent problem drinking, to lower depression, therefore we enhance the life satisfaction of elderly people living alone.
